Chapter 1: Vengeance

In the world of Circunima, there is a great metropolis known as Phoenix City. Within this magical metropolis, where seemingly anything can happen, crime often runs rampant, and this was the case for a young girl named Molly, who's father had just been murdered by gangsters for the sword he had been making.

However, unbeknown to her, her precious pet cat Cerys was really a nekomimi that had fallen in love with her while in his feline form and watched over her at all times. Seeing the gangsters flee, Cerys pursued them to avenge his young friend, and began to stalk them like a ghost in the night with throwing stars, picking them off one by one.

However, before he could finish his grim task, another entered the fray. The young man, with seemingly no provacation whatsoever, began to attack the criminals, finishing the job Cerys started.

After accidentally inciting the young man to an angry retreat in the conversation that followed, Cerys returned the sword home to Molly the next morning, who was confused as to how he knew where to find it but grateful to have a friend like him.

As Molly's mother came home, Cerys knew things would be hard for them, but was glad they were reunited. As he dwelled on this, he remembered that tough kid from the alley and decided to go out to look for him and explain things.

Unfortunately, not far from where last night's battle had taken place, Cerys found the kid, being grappled from either side by two strong men while a third coldly burned him with a lit cigar.

Jumping in, Cerys managed to distract the thugs long enough for the young brawler to get free, and between the two of them they made short work of the gang.

Grateful for the help, the young man introduced himself as Mason McDaniel and took Cerys back to the bar he owned for a drink. Once there, he met the boy's little sister Cally, who was quick to jump on her brother for neglecting his professional duties.

Thereafter, Cerys and Mason had their drink - a few too many for Cerys - who ended up drunk under the table by his new friend and slept it off for the rest of the night.

PostSubject: Chapter 2: Southern Exorcism   Mon Mar 09, 2009 7:09 pm

Chapter 2: Southern Exorcism

Cerys awoke with a hangover the next morning and found the two McDaniel siblings, Mason and Cally, sharing some light ribbing at each other before getting started on their job for the day.

As customers began filtering in, the neko began listening to various conversations, one in particular catching his ear; some locals discussing the mysterious death of an old man they knew which, at least one was convinced, couldn't have been committed by a normal human being.

Inviting himself into the conversation was a young grasslander who introduced himself as Tal Kadorin, Wandering Exorcist. The young monk claimed to believe the story of the mysterious assassin, but before he could gather much information, Cerys, still in cat form, jumped on his lap to get attention.

As Cerys showed off his sentient intelligence, Tal was convinced he was a possessed cat and promptly tried to exorcise him. This failed, of course, and the priest was laughed out of the bar.

Feeling bad for embarrasing him that much, Cerys caught up with the grasslander outside the bar and, leading him to a quiet place, transformed and introduced himself.

Satisfied that he had been right about the cat being special, albiet not the exact reason why, Tal began to talk freely with Cerys about the strange death of the old man, and they agreed to meet back at the Golden Apple, Mason's bar, after Cerys took care of a brief errand.

To that end, Cerys ran home to check on Molly, but learned from her mother's idle talk that the young girl had gone out to play, and so he went off to look for her.

He found her in a park, but that wasn't all! A dark presence crept up on and possessed the girl, leading her back into town toward a thieve's guild. Cerys followed the captive Molly, but realizing he couldn't help her, remembered the exorcist Tal and ran to the bar to get him.

Unfortunately, Tal had already left, sensing a dark presence heading into the city, and the two met as the possessed Molly attacked a thug who assumed she was just a little girl.

Wasting no time, Tal jumped in to exorcise the vengeful specter from Molly's body, releasing it in a torrent of angry cries.

Once Cerys got the unconscious Molly out of harm's way, he was able to distract the wraith while Tal readied a final exorcism to banish it back to whence it came.

The battle was won, but the man who had been attacked lay dying. Though he was clearly a criminal, Tal could not allow him to suffer like that, so with Cerys, he took him to the temple of Sol, where a young priest agreed to heal everyone.

The young priest, Brother Light, was a humble fellow who was glad to help where he could, and took great delight in talking religion with Tal while Cerys left to check on Molly.

He found her on the rooftop where he had left her, too scared to get down. Cerys wanted to help her, but was torn because, to do so, he would have to reveal himself.

Luckily, an old shopkeeper heard them and fetched a ladder to get them down, inviting Molly and her furry friend inside for tea.

The old woman owned a charm shop, and though she appeared to know a very subtle magic as well as being uncannily wise, she was decidedly a kind soul who believed Cerys was a guardian spirit, as all cats were, and gladly talked with Molly about her adventure that afternoon.

After they left the shop of the kindly old Caroline, Molly returned home just in time for dinner, while Cerys returned to the temple of Sol to find Brother Light, who led him in turn to Tal.

Tal, who had been practicing his kata and meditating, informed the priest and Cerys that he felt a dark presence in the rain outside, and that it would make itself known soon.

To be on the safe side, Brother Light gave the two warriors two of a set of five bracelets that would allow those wearing them to communicate with one another by thought alone.

After bringing a fourth bracelet to Mason and getting the young man reacquainted with his new friend Tal, Cerys finally came home and fell asleep in Molly's arms.
