"He's dead," Laus looked sadly over Vite's body as they found him in the courtyard. The battered swordsman had not survived his injuries after being left for dead by his attacker.



"What did you expect?," Glace crossed his arms with a haughtily indignant stare, "This is a battle to the death. Only one of us can come out alive, and when our enemies have been dispatched, you can be certain that I won't give you time to heal again before I finish you."

"You'd better hope they have a cure for your poison then," Laus shot back with a glare at the man's icy indifference.

About that time, the fortress nearby began to collapse, putting both men on their guard. In the chaos, they had no time to see any figures that may or may not have been trapped until one began wandering out of the smoke.



"Just... us now...," the man winced an eye shut as he lurched forward, wrecking ball in hand, clearly on his last leg.

"And what do you know of honor?," the archer grimaced, holding his broken ribs even as he started to pull himself to his feet, the pain on his face appearing to go beyond his injuries, "You, who wear that armor and carry that shield like it still means something to you! You haven't seen the world boy. You don't know how cruel it can be!"



"No crueler than what you did to the shells of men lying before you in pools of their own blood," Laus healed himself atop his horse, ready to strike again if the man should dare attack.

But he didn't.

"My son, you great fool!," the archer broke into tears as he quivered with rage, "They took my son away from me. I watched him die before they put me in a cage and shipped me this way."

"Dear god...," Laus winced. This situation was getting more complicated for the honor-bound champion.

"I swore it to myself somewhere on the way," Greff took a step back, bow knocked but lowered, ready to raise it if the foolish man should attempt anything, "No matter what, I'd get out of this pit and return to the Sylvanna to avenge my son. He was everything to me. Now all I have left is the promise that his spirit can rest if I can just spill the blood of the monsters that spilled his first."

After a moment's pause, the knight descended from his mount, "You're gravely injured. You won't get far on your quest without someone to heal those ribs."



His red face breaking into a wry grin at that, Greff gave a short laugh, "You may be a knight at heart after all son, but think with your head for a moment. We're trapped here until one of us dies. How do you intend to get out of that?"

In abrupt response, Laus looked up to the corrupt proprietor on his balcony above, "The winner of this contest is Greff. I forfeit. I'd rather die than kill him."



Dule's face was humorless, almost taut, as he silently stood. He couldn't kill his star gladiator. That would be bad for business when the crowd was clearly moved by this sappy display of chivarly. And yet, he hated being beaten at his own game.

"That will not be necessary, good sir," the kitsunemimi acted the part, salvaging his reputation if he couldn't have that final kill, "Greff goes free, but as you both failed to observe the rules of the game, the prize shall be kept in storage until a successor to the legacy of this day emerges victorious in a similar tournament. Needless to say, there are many here today, myself included, who will be looking forward to your next battle Sir Laus The Merciful."

After laying a healing hand on his new-found friend, Sir Laus removed his helmet so he could look at Dule face to face when he answered, "As am I, Grand Proprietor. As am I."
